A Study Abroad Program is rare in the public-school sector but that is what sets McAllen ISD apart from others.
Nearly two dozen intrepid students from McAllen ISD will step into a new world of wonder and excitement as they fly to Europe and spend two weeks immersed in the district’s Study Abroad Program.
All 20 students will depart from McAllen on Saturday, June 13 and return on June 27. McAllen ISD staff will act as guides and chaperones.
The students (all incoming high school seniors) will venture to Salamanca, Spain and will study at La Universidad de Salamanca (University of Salamanca). Their coursework will focus on the Spanish language, culture and communications. There will also be guided cultural and historical tours throughout Salamanca including the Plaza Mayor, Salamanca Cathedral and the Convento de San Esteban following daily classes. Weekend excursions will include jaunts to the cities of Segovia, La Granja and Toledo.
Students will also engage in reflective journaling and cultural immersion activities. It is a life-altering experience.
This is the fourth year McAllen ISD has offered this unique program through a partnership with the University of Salamanca. Students are selected for the program through a rigorous application process. They answer a series of questions, submit transcripts and essays. Attendance is also a factor. A committee makes the selections. .
